Talulah Riley Talks “The Summerhouse” and Rob

Let’s start with The Summer House. Riley is a beautiful but reserved English girl who decides to spend the summer of 1969 in a friend’s French estate to recover from a broken heart, when out of the bushes comes Pattinson. The Summer House packs a lot of heat into just a few minutes.
Monsters and Critics - There are just 12 minutes to get to know Jane in Summer House. But you made her a dimensional person – how?
Talulah Riley - Daisy spent a lot of time with Rob and me discussing the back-story, so we were aware of our characters situations and the decisions they’d made to get them to the point where the audience meets them, in the film. Action is character, as they say, so just knowing that my character was the type of girl who would have to run away to France to get over a break-up, gave me a good place to start.
M&C - How did you get to ‘know’ her? What did you work on to determine what was she like, and what she thought, who she was?
TR - I was lucky enough to be given a copy of the book The Summer House, by the writer Ian Beck. This really helped me with the characterization. Prose is good for filling in the details – especially when there is very little dialogue.
M&C – The Summer House is set in the free love era. How free was Jane?
TR - Although the film is set in the Swinging 60’s, Jane isn’t really that into free love. She’s more of a true romantic – idealistic, gentle, loyal, and intensely hurt by her lover’s betrayal.
M&C - Your Summer House lover, Robert Pattinson has been struck by a movie supernova. Did you work together during or before Twilight?
TR - I worked with Rob before Twilight. I’m very happy for his success. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. He’s a lovely actor and a lovely friend.
M&C - Is he a good kisser? Neck nuzzler?
TR - He’s a very good neck nuzzler.

The only Robert Pattinson project most people know from his pre-"Twilight" days is his small role in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as Cedric Diggory, but as his popularity has grown, more of his earlier projects are getting wide release. The latest of those is the short film "The Summer House," which was filmed for a week back in the summer of 2006, but is only hitting film festivals and iTunes this year. You can watch the trailer here.
First-time director Daisy Gills said she actually cast Rob because she was recommended him by Campbell Mitchell, who had worked on props for another of his early projects, "The Haunted Airman."
"He said, this guy is amazing, and he's really nice, and I think he'd be really up for working on a short film," Gills told MTV News. "I saw a picture of him and I thought, he's fantastic."
Up until that point, Rob's costar Talulah Riley was best known for her work in Joe Wright's "Pride & Prejudice," and hadn't yet starred in her big hit, "Pirate Radio" (known as "The Boat That Rocked" in the UK). Gills hired a cast director to find her an actress to play the short's main character, Jane, and thought Talulah was the perfect fit.
"Talulah was amazing. The thing that I found most amazing about her was her versatility. You could give her a small amount of direction, and she would deliver a completely different but equally wonderful performance. I was like, wow," said Gills.
But it was the chemistry between the two that really helped the film work. At 13 minutes in length, "The Summer House" follows Jane as she flees to France to stay with her aunt after her boyfriend Richard (Rob) dumps her for another girl. However, he follows her to the summer house to try to win her back and, on the night of the moon landing, tries to make his move. The result of his efforts helps Jane realize that -- in Gills' words -- love isn't black and white.
It was necessary to Gills to have the film set on the night of the moon landing because she felt everyone remembers where they were the night man landed on the moon, but the night was important for Jane because she realized that love was different and more complicated than she had always imagined. "I think you needed [something as momentous as] the moon landing to kind of help the slightness of the story become stronger," she said.
Gills felt the character of Richard was a struggle for Rob, because he had to play someone so different from himself. "He's quite a gentle person. He's a really nice person. And he has to play quite a not very nice character, and I think he struggled with that," Gills said. "He wasn't playing a role that he was particularly comfortable with, but he still manages to have a real presence: brooding, slightly menacing. You're never quite sure whether he wants her because he wants to have sex with her or because he loves her. And I think he delivers that brilliantly."
After watching the short, we have to agree with her on Rob's performance, and "Twilight" fans will see a little bit of what would become Edward Cullen in Rob's portrayal of Richard. But, beyond the great acting, the set and costume design were our favorite parts of the film. The short is based on a short story of the same name, and Gills said they were able to film for free in the summer house that inspired the story.
The dresses are vintage 1960s as well because Gills borrowed them from her mother, though the gorgeous green dress Talulah wears at the end was a creation of their costume designer. The pearls she wears at the end of the film were borrowed by the French actress, Marianne Borgo, who plays her aunt in the film, just like Jane would have borrowed them from her aunt in the film.
"The Summer House" had its premiere at the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year, and is going to be offered for $1.99 on iTunes starting July 13 by Shorts International. It will next be shown at the Rushes Soho Short Film Festival later this month. But for anyone hoping to catch a sight of Rob promoting the short, Gills said she feels chances are slim. Many things have changed in the life of Robert Pattinson since he performed as Richard, and now he is much harder to get in contact with. In fact, Gills doesn't even know if he's seen the film, though she knows many of his fans want to.
"A whole variety of people are really interested, and I hope that they'll enjoy what they see. I hope they won't be disappointed that there isn't more of him, if you know what I mean," she said. "And I hope he enjoys it too! I've not heard back from him about it. I think his agent saw."

LONDON, UK, 17 June 2010 – Shorts International will release the short movie The Summer House featuring The Twilight Saga: Eclipse star Robert Pattinson on July 13. The film will be available to download from iTunes Movie Stores in the US, Canada, UK, France, Ireland and Germany.
It is Northern France and the swinging sixties are well underway. While mankind is landing on the moon, a young girl becomes a woman and learns that life on earth can prove to be just as alien as those famous first steps.
The Summer House pairs the emerging British starlet, Talulah Riley (St Trinian’s, The Boat That Rocked) alongside international idol, Robert Pattinson.

The film was shot in 2008, just prior to the release of “Twilight”, the final buffer between Rob and international mega-stardom. In “The Summer House”, Rob plays the role of 18-year-old Richard, the love interest of Jane. Having broken up with her to date another woman prior to her departure for the summer, once dumped by the other, he appears unexpectedly at Jane’s retreat to win her back. Through a series of benign advances (e.g., love letters) and other more forceful attempts, he pushes Jane to come farther into herself.
The film’s official web site describes Richard as a “good looking boy, with an ambivalent feminine side, skinny and androgynous in the fashion of that time. He is narcissistic and entirely self regarding, his is a solipsistic universe with only one golden person inhabiting it; himself.”
The festival will run from June 1st to June 6th in Toronto, Canada, and will feature a series of celebrity shorts. In addition to Robert Pattinson in “The Summer House” other notable celeb appearances include Vincent D’Onofrio (“The New Tenants”), Saturday Night Live’s Kristen Wiig (“One Night Only”), and the voice of Meryl Streep (“There Must Be More to Life”).

The CFC Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto tweeted her yesterday and confirmed that The Summer House will be screening there on June 3rd and June 4th at 7pm. The entire line-up of short films will be announced via their website today and tickets will be going on sale as well today. Please visit their website for more details!

New Information on The Summer House

The BSC updated with their program for that night, including The Summer House, listing it as 14 minutes long.
Filmed in France, this is the first venture by Miss Gili to produce write and direct her own short film. Although she is joint principle of the non government funded London Film Academy, her short was made totally independent of the LFA. The result is a warm, dreamy piece, which captures the lazy summer afternoons and cool evenings at the French villa, for a gathering of family members. I suppose the temptation may have been there to pace it up a bit, but she held to the story which gently unfolded. Nicely photographed by Alex Ryle.

I attended the premiere screenings of The Summer House, directed by RUBBISH BFF Orlando Gili's (aka photographer aka the guy who lent us a fridge during last fashion week!) sister Daisy Gili an eve ago, and I am so happy that I did. There are many reasons for this...here are some
The film was actually shot about three years ago, however set in the late 1960's against the historic back drop of man landing on the moon, it doesn't matter and actually seems fitting with the current 40 year celebrations of the occasion that it has it firsts screenings in 2009. Additionally as Daisy said herself before the screening it doesn't hurt having cast back then one of the now biggest rising stars in Hollywood as your lead. None other than Robert Pattinson...back up off the floor ladies!
Now I will probably have many a teenage tantrum thrown my way for saying this but I much prefer this floppy haired tanned look over the spikey haired pale vampire Edward Cullen that R Patz has found fame for.
