Macleans: “Cronenberg casts ‘Twilight’ hearthrob as Wall Street vampire”

Robert Pattinson is about to enter a new kind of Twilight Zone, courtesy of David Cronenberg. It was announced today that the Canadian filmmaker has cast the vampire heartthrob as a bloodsucker of a different colour—a multi-billionaire hedge fund manager in Manhattan who squanders his fortune betting against the survival of the world economy. The movie is Cosmopolis, a Canada-France coproduction based on the 2003 nouvella of the same name by award-winning American writer Don Delillo. Pattinson is set to co-star with Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version), Juliette Binoche (The English Patient), and Matheu Amalric (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly).

Cronenberg appears to be on a roll. After the success of The History of Violence (2005) and Eastern Promises (2007), two Oscar-nominated hits, he has been creeping ever closer to mainstream acceptance, without compromising his singular vision. He recently completed A Dangerous Method, a German co-production about Freud and Jung, starring (in his third role with director) Viggo Mortensen—it will likely open next fall after a festival premiere in Cannes, Venice or TIFF. It’s always a good sign when a filmmaker has another movie on the go before his last one has hit the screen.

Landing a Cronenberg role is a savvy move for Pattinson, who needs to make the leap from the matinee idol ghetto of Twilight to more mature roles. His is not unlike the dilemma faced by an aging child star. In his previous non-vampire outing, the romance Remember Me, Pattinson showed the promise of a serious actor, but the film was a dud. Cronenberg is always a class act, and (despite his image as a horrormeister) he’s very much an actor’s director. Colin Farrell had originally been tapped for the Pattinson role, until he opted to star in a remake of Total Recall. And earlier candidates attached to the role of the female lead included Marion Cotillard and Keira Knightley, who stars in A Dangerous Method.

Cronenberg wrote the script for Cosmopolis, which is described as a “thriller.” In the director’s previous adaptations of fiction—notably Naked Lunch, Dead Ringers and Crash—he has played fast and loose with the source material, bending it to his own vision, so don’t expect Delillo’s work to be transposed too literally. I haven’t read the book. But it appears to have some classic Cronenberg elements, including some glimmers of Crash. Here’s how Wikipedia summarizes the plot:

“Cosmopolis is the story of Eric Packer, a 28 year old multi-billionaire asset manager who makes anodyssey across midtown Manhattan in order to get a haircut. The stretch limo which adorns the cover of the book is richly described as highly technical and very luxurious, filled with television screens and computer monitors, bulletproofed and floored with Carrara marble. It is also cork lined to eliminate (though unsuccessfully, as Packer notes) the intrusion of street noise.

“Like James Joyce‘s Ulysses, Cosmopolis covers roughly one day of time and includes highly sexed women and the theme of father-son separation. Packer’s voyage is obstructed by various traffic jams caused by a presidential visit to the city, a funeral procession for a Sufi rap star and a full-fledged riot. Along the way, the hero has several chance meetings with his wife, seeing her in a taxi, a bookstore, and lying naked in the street, taking part in a movie as an extra. Meanwhile, Packer is stalked by two men, a comical “pastry assassin” and an unstable “credible threat“. Through the course of the day, the protagonist loses incredible amounts of money for his clients by betting against the rise of the yen, a loss that parallels his own fall. Packer seems to relish being unburdened by the loss of so much money, even stopping to make sure he loses his wife’s fortune as well, to ensure his ruin is inevitable.”

“After much speculation, ‘Cosmopolis’ had finally, by the producer (Alfama Films) some news, confirming what we had said earlier. Robert Pattinson (Twilight: Breaking Dawn) and Paul Giamatti (“Shrink”) are even part of the cast, being accompanied by Juliette Binoche (Copy As) and Mathieu Amalric (Tournée).
Based on the homonymous book by Don DeLillo, author of bestsellers such as “Underworld” and “White Noise”, “Cosmopolis” follows a billionaire 28 years as it crosses the city of New York to get a haircut, which reveals a true odyssey. In between he deceives the woman is chased and attacked and eventually ends up losing his entire fortune, all in one day.
Who will also collaborate on the film is Howard Shore, David Cronenberg’s usual collaborator and author of soundtracks for the trilogy “Lord of the Rings” or “Silence of the Lambs.” Also Suschitzy Peter, Director of Photography at the usual universe of David Cronenberg, and has in its run movies like “The Empire Strikes Back” and “Crash,” will continue its partnership with filmmaker in ‘Cosmopolis’. It is an April day in the year 2000 and an era is about to end. The booming times of market optimism — when the culture boiled with money and corporations seemed more vital and influential than governments — are poised to crash. Eric Packer (Pattinson), a billionaire asset manager at age twenty-eight, emerges from his penthouse triplex and settles into his lavishly customized white stretch limousine. Today he is a man with two missions: to pursue a cataclysmic bet against the yen and to get a haircut across town. Stalled in traffic by a presidential motorcade, a music idol’s funeral, and a violent political demonstration, Eric receives a string of visitors — experts on security, technology, currency, finance, and a few sexual partners — as the limo sputters toward an increasingly uncertain future. Based on the novel by Don DeLillo. (Giamatti plays the dual role of Benno Levin/Richard Steers. / Production office opens Mid-March.)

Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon Talk Their Water for Elephants Forbidden Romance

>> 2011/02/16

Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson share a smooch and more in the upcoming 'Water for Elephants,' and the onscreen lovebirds are talking about their forbidden movie romance with ET! They also share a nugget of obscure movie trivia -- they were once cast in a film as mother and son!

In 'Water for Elephants,' Reese plays the married star performer in a circus who catches the attention of a bachelor animal caretaker, played by 'Twilight' star Rob. When ET visited the Los Angeles set during production on the film last summer, Reese rode atop an enormous elephant for a scene involving an elaborate 1930s parade.

Reese gushed about sharing love scenes with Rob, proclaiming, "I am so lucky. He's so amazing and wonderful and sweet and just the nicest guy too, so you can just add that to the soup. I mean, he's just so good looking and he's a really nice person."

Rob said the pair hadn't yet shot their love scenes, but shared, "Reese has only got two days [of work] left [on the film]. So … they must expect me to be very professional about it." He also gave a tidbit about one love scene -- he says it ends with his character getting beaten up!

"We'll probably just laugh the whole time, because all we do is just laugh and joke around," Reese predicted of filming the scenes.

Although Reese and Rob are an onscreen couple in 'Water for Elephants,' they had a very different movie relationship when they filmed 2004's 'Vanity Fair' -- mother and son! Despite Reese being only ten years older then Rob, he was cast as her son, though his scenes later landed on the cutting room floor.

Reese recalls of meeting Rob back then, "He was walking down this corridor and I turned to the director, and I said, 'That's my son? He's so good looking!' I was like, 'He's so hot!'"

For his part, Rob remembers, "Even then, I realized on the set, I was like, I look too old to be playing her son. I mean, that's probably why I was cut."

Based on the best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, 'Water for Elephants' follows an elderly man (Hal Holbrook) reminiscing about his days working as an animal caretaker at a circus. A young veterinary school student (Robert) witnessing the beauty and brutality of life under the big top, he falls for Marlena (Reese), the captivating star performer, and suffers the wrath of her charismatic but dangerous husband, August ('Inglourious Basterds' Oscar winner Christoph Waltz).

'Water for Elephants' will debut in theaters on April 15, 2011.

‘Bel Ami’ will be ready for Cannes or Venice Film Festival

The Uma Thurman and Robert Pattinson vehicle Bel Ami, adapted from Guy de Maupassant’s short story, will be ready for Cannes or Venice. Rights have already been sold to Studio Canal Plus for France and Germany. Optimum has UK rights.

The International Film Festival in Venice runs from August 31 to September 10 and the selection announced in July. In case the film would not be presented at Cannes, it is legitimate to think that will be offered the choice of Venice. Remains whether the conditions to be proposed for selection are the same as for Cannes, ie no diffusion in a country other than the original one. If so, expect to see the film’s release date pushed back again. We will know more next April, the month in which the films will be officially announced for the selection at Cannes.

Biography

Robert Thomas-Pattinson was born on May 13, 1986, in Barnes, a suburb of London, the capital of England.
