Premiere: What made you return to Cannes with Cosmopolis ?

David Cronenberg: The festival and I have a long history. In a sense I have the feeling of coming home. I think it is an ideal film to Cannes and I’m excited about the idea of Rob.

Q: Today it is impossible to imagine one in this paper. However, you had suggested before Colin Farrell …

DC: When Colin left the project to film the remake of Total Recall me rethink everything. Anyway he was old for the part: is 35 and I wanted to be faithful to the book, it was necessary to have someone of 25 years. Then I started to review all the actors of that age and that’s how I thought of Rob. I had seen him in Twilight , of course, but nothing I had done so far really predisposed him to act in Cosmopolis . Unless chose an actor by the perceived potential in him, not his Curriculum Vitae . And the more I thought, the more I liked the idea.

Q: Did he pass an audition?

DC: No. Especially talk much on the phone. Rob not one of those people with an ego exacerbated. I really wanted to make the movie, but seriously wondered if I could. It was his only concern. He said, “you really think I’m good enough to play this part. I fear ruin your movie. ” I replied that the conversation had no intention to convince him that would be perfect for Cosmopolis .

Q: It’s hard to imagine who was in charge of Twilight . Have you seen all four movies?

DC: (laughs). No not yet. Have I seen one and a half.

Q: The saga has made him a star, but has also created an absurd situation: people who have not seen it act has decreed that he is an idol for young girls lacking in talent.

DC: This reflects the world we live in today, where the Internet, among other things, promotes the kind of hasty and dangerous. I ignore them and try to see beyond. The advantage is that fans of Rob await the moment when he will show everyone who is able to exist beyond Twilight . And if all they’re going to go see Cosmopolis , I do not care about the future of the film.

Q: How did the other actors when you told them that Robert Pattinson would have the lead role?

DC: Paul Giamatti, who was one of the first actors to join the cast, found a brilliant idea. I’m not sure that Juliette Binoche would have weighed the popularity of Rob when he signed for the film, but none of them expressed doubt or contempt. Nobody told me: “What led you to hire the guy from Twilight . Quite the contrary. In fact, Rob and Juliette surprised in the midst of a very deep conversation about French cinema. It is understood a great time.

Q: Do you have in mind a scene in which he has impressed in particular.

DC: By the end of the shoot, I was so into his role only to one or two takes per shot. And he surprised every time by the way they managed to secure all the emotions that were at stake. He was completely covered with the loneliness and pain of the character. Because we shot the film more or less in chronological order, the final scene we shot was the last. And I just need to make a decision of how perfect they were Rob and Paul. When I said “cut” all team members looked stunned by what had just happened.

Q: Seeing Robert Pattinson in the movie, you immediately think of Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, who were teen idols before they can really show what had led by Tim Burton and David Fincher …

DC: Some actors become stars thanks to her pretty face and a charisma that goes beyond the screen. At first, they rarely offer the opportunity to show something more than that. But it happens that not only does that have to show … With Cosmopolis was proud to give Rob a chance to test the ability of his talent. If he does well, I see no problem making a career comparable to that of Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt. Even better.
