Robert Pattinson Worldwide

Translated Japanese Article on the Tokyo “New Moon” Press Conference

>> 2009/11/06

Robert Pattinson, star of the international hit vampire film New Moon: The Twilight Saga (opening 11/28), and director Chris Weitz have arrived in Japan. A fan meeting held at Shinagawa InterCity Hotel opened to explosive cheers and Rob was all smiles.

This fan meeting was part of the film’s earliest industry screening; even at the high price of ¥10,000 each, all 400 tickets sold out in one hour. Seating for the event was limited but fans still began lining up the night before, proving just how popular the series truly is.

Those gathered for the event were mostly Rob fans, blushing and enthusiastic. When he greeted them in Japanese with, “Konnichiwa, Tokyo, genki?” (Hello, Tokyo, are you well?) they replied with excited shouts of “Kyaa~!” that echoed across the hall.

During the Q&A session, one fan asked: “Would you be willing to go to the lengths Edward did to protect your loved ones?” Rob answered sincerely, “I would definitely want to protect my loved ones. But sometimes, like Edward, there are situations where you find yourself lying to protect your girlfriend. Really, isn’t telling the truth better? The effects will come back to you later on.” At this point, his efforts were rewarded with another “Kyaa~!!”

Next was a contest to see who would win a pair of tickets to the film’s world premiere in LA. Six finalists were chosen, and each of the six had to explain why they were the series’ number one fan. The one with the most appeal would win. Their passionate answers ranged from, “I went to see the first film 14 times!” to “I LOVE EDWARD!” The climax came in the form of a girl who began crying as she explained that she had come all the way from Fukuoka for the event.

Of course, Robert and the director couldn’t narrow it down to just one winner, so in the end they had to rely on a secret weapon: the Red Thread Machine. The fan who became bound to Robert by the red thread would receive a ticket headed for magnificent Los Angeles.

Robert and the director exchanged fierce hugs with the fans on the platform, and it seemed as though the contact alone expressed the joy in their hearts. Even now, the popularity of the series in Japan continues to climb. To those who have yet to see it: don’t wait much longer!
